Ananda Leinartas, an MSW candidate at the Jane Adams School of Social Work at the University of Illinois, Chicago, received the 12th Gabe W. Miller Memorial Foundation Scholarship at the organization’s Fifth Annual Celebration of Life Dinner, which was held in November at Ravinia Green Country Club in Riverwoods, Illinois.
Ms. Leinartas received her bachelor’s in psychology and gerontology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006, where she was elected to Phi Eta Sigma. She self-financed her first two part-time years at Jane Adams by concurrent full-time employment as a Crisis Triage Worker with Resurrection Behavioral Health Procare. Ananda’s third year required full-time studies, so she had to give up her employment. Her Gabe Miller scholarship, matched by the school, was thus especially helpful.
Ananda’s previous experiential education included preparing and delivering educational presentations for the American Cancer Society, working as an Easter Seals’ camp counselor for disabled and chronically ill adult and child campers and supervisory and coaching positions with the Park District of Oak Park, Illinois. She had also volunteered in the Occupational Therapy Department of Provena Hospital and in the Operation Snowball Program while in high school.
In addition to her election to Phi Eta Sigma mentioned above, a singular achievement for University of Illinois students, Ms. Leinartas is also the recipient of the Seabury Scholarship and a member of the NASW. She hopes to put her new degree to good use in advocating and working for the chronically mentally ill.
