Lauren Higbee, a second year MSW student at University of Illinois Chicago/Jane Addams College of Social Work has been awarded the 17th Gabe W. Miller Memorial Foundation Scholarship.
Lauren has a strong commitment to social justice as evidenced by her research as an undergraduate at Syracuse University on environmental justice and at Jane Addams on CHA’s tenancy policies, especially the 90 days or out substance abuse “cure” limit, recently rescinded. Lauren’s field placements and paying internships have been with Centers for New Horizons and she has been selected for the Child Welfare Traineeship. Her area of concentration is Child and Family. When she combines this with her experience and passion for social justice, Lauren will be an even more powerful agent for change, for the benefit of our society as a whole.Update 2012: Lauren is employed by Center for New Horizons, as a Child Welfare Specialist in the Foster Care Department. Recently, she got two children out of the "system" and back to their mother - a very satisfying experience.
